BLUGRASS BEST } BabyCakes for your babycakes

Babycakes cupcakes

“The Princess” | Chocolate with raspberry buttercream
[ ]

By Rachel Carter

Tricia and Keith Clemons opened BabyCakes Cupcakes in Lexington with one dream in mind: To do what they love each and every day. Because the Clemons make their cupcakes with love, BabyCakes make the perfect treat for your sweetheart.

Valentine’s Day is always crazy at the shop, Tricia said. So, for the past five years, working side by side at BabyCakes has been the Clemons’ Valentine’s Day tradition. “My husband and I celebrate the day by icing as many cupcakes as possible and then toasting with a glass of wine for surviving another Heart Day,” Tricia said.

“We tend to be a bit cheesy regarding our gifts,” Tricia said before ‘fessing up that, really, she’s the cheesy one. “I bought him a stuffed monkey years ago that dances and sings ‘Wild Thing.’ Said monkey has a tendency of making an appearance every Valentine’sDay since that fateful purchase, singing and doing his jig in random locations throughout our house, reminding my husband that he indeed ‘makes my heart sing.'”

Think outside the box of chocolates this Valentine’s Day and pick up a bouquet of BabyCakes for your sweetheart. Donia’s husband, Greg, told her to order a dozen of her favorite BabyCakes flavors for her birthday and Donia couldn’t wait to pick them up this past weekend.  She couldn’t wait to get them home before digging in, either! { Donia’s favorite BabyCakes flavors! }

BabyCakes’ most-popular Valentine’s cupcakes tend to be anything infused with pink and red, and Tricia sent over three of BabyCakes’ top Valentine’s flavors.

1 { SUMMERTIME }  Strawberry cupcake topped with strawberry buttercream icing. Yes, please.

2 { SOUTHERN BELLE }  Red. Velvet. Need we say more?

3 { SWEET & SASSY REDHEADS } White chocolate and raspberry cupcake of amazingness.

BLUGRASS BEST } Dress up & Twirl

By Rachel Carter

I have a simple black T-shirt dress that I usually wear with leggings or tights, and every time I wear that outfit, people tell me how nice I look or comment on how dressed up I am. It’s a testament to the power of a dress because — let’s be honest — that get-up is basically a giant T-shirt and skinny sweatpants. But the great thing about a dress is that, in many ways, it’s as easy as jeans. Step in. Zip up. Done. Yet you look amazing and feminine and like you put in extra effort when, really, it probably took less time than wriggling into a pair of pants, and you didn’t even have to pick out a top.

The moral of the story? Put on a dress! Even if you’re already fond of dresses, what better time than Valentine’s Day to step up your dress? Maybe your soulmate is planning a date that would put any romantic comedy to shame, and you want to wear something extra special. Perhaps you and your girlfriends are going to paint the town red, and you want to feel extra fab. Either way, dress it up!

Twirl Boutique in Lexington is the perfect place to find your Valentine’s dress. Owner Ty Slone McBrayer was searching for a career she could love and would enjoy every day when she came across the Twirl website in January 2009. Realizing Lexington needed a place where brides and their best friends would enjoy the experience of choosing their special dresses, she opened the doors to Twirl in November 2009. Ty has been in love with her job ever since.

Speaking of love, when asked about her Valentine’s Day traditions, Ty’s assistant manager, Amanda Caldwell, told us she is starting a new tradition this year. She’ll be spending Valentine’s Day with all the single ladies (great, now Beyoncé is in my head) doing all the things they love: playing laser tag, ice skating, eating chocolate fondue, and catching a chick flick. She usually spends Valentine’s evening with her girlfriends and says, “I’m so lucky to be surrounded by strong, amazing women!”

Amanda sent over Twirl’s top three picks for dresses that would be perfect for your Valentine’s date/outing/shindig. Here’s what she had to say about each dress:

DRESS 1 } Talk about a wow dress!  This new Lela Rose dress arrived at Twirl just last week, and “we are trying to find every excuse for a need to wear it!” The daisy lace overlay is ivory, but the sheath beneath can be changed to any of Lela Rose’s 32 shades of crinkle chiffon.
DRESS 2 } The Jenny Yoo collection has added a social line to their bridesmaid group. The Harlow dress features a classic bateau neckline and hits at the natural waist.  This gorgeous lace dress has gentle pleating and lands just above the knee with a slight scallop.  Harlow has a beautiful, low V-back and comes in four different shades: Paprika, Evergreen, Mustard  and Navy. “Twirl is OH-SO excited to add the social line to our collection!”
DRESS 3 } Lynn Lugo is a custom designer who allows you to choose any combination of her tops and skirts in any color.  Twirl recently had a trunk show for Lynn and fell head over heels in love with one of her color-block dresses. How fun is this coral combo?!

 Don’t miss out on the Amsale Bridesmaids trunk show Feb. 15-16 at Twirl, 121 Clay Ave. in Lexington. }

PINK.  In my book, the color pink is tied only with robins egg blue as THE best color in the world.

It  has always been the epitome of February to me. You see, in my family there are 3 generations of daughters born in February. I tease my seven-year-old, telling her that she must keep up the tradition when she starts her family one day. For that reason and because our birthdays are all so close to Valentines Day, the month and the color have a very personal connection for me.

Pink, the iconic color for anything girl. It’s feminine, sweet, innocent, romantic, cheerful, warm. It’s a blush, a sunrise, it’s tiny fingers wrapped around yours.

For this reason I dedicate all my invitation posts this month to February’s signature color… PINK!
