BLUGRASS BEST } Dress up & Twirl

By Rachel Carter

I have a simple black T-shirt dress that I usually wear with leggings or tights, and every time I wear that outfit, people tell me how nice I look or comment on how dressed up I am. It’s a testament to the power of a dress because — let’s be honest — that get-up is basically a giant T-shirt and skinny sweatpants. But the great thing about a dress is that, in many ways, it’s as easy as jeans. Step in. Zip up. Done. Yet you look amazing and feminine and like you put in extra effort when, really, it probably took less time than wriggling into a pair of pants, and you didn’t even have to pick out a top.

The moral of the story? Put on a dress! Even if you’re already fond of dresses, what better time than Valentine’s Day to step up your dress? Maybe your soulmate is planning a date that would put any romantic comedy to shame, and you want to wear something extra special. Perhaps you and your girlfriends are going to paint the town red, and you want to feel extra fab. Either way, dress it up!

Twirl Boutique in Lexington is the perfect place to find your Valentine’s dress. Owner Ty Slone McBrayer was searching for a career she could love and would enjoy every day when she came across the Twirl website in January 2009. Realizing Lexington needed a place where brides and their best friends would enjoy the experience of choosing their special dresses, she opened the doors to Twirl in November 2009. Ty has been in love with her job ever since.

Speaking of love, when asked about her Valentine’s Day traditions, Ty’s assistant manager, Amanda Caldwell, told us she is starting a new tradition this year. She’ll be spending Valentine’s Day with all the single ladies (great, now Beyoncé is in my head) doing all the things they love: playing laser tag, ice skating, eating chocolate fondue, and catching a chick flick. She usually spends Valentine’s evening with her girlfriends and says, “I’m so lucky to be surrounded by strong, amazing women!”

Amanda sent over Twirl’s top three picks for dresses that would be perfect for your Valentine’s date/outing/shindig. Here’s what she had to say about each dress:

DRESS 1 } Talk about a wow dress!  This new Lela Rose dress arrived at Twirl just last week, and “we are trying to find every excuse for a need to wear it!” The daisy lace overlay is ivory, but the sheath beneath can be changed to any of Lela Rose’s 32 shades of crinkle chiffon.
DRESS 2 } The Jenny Yoo collection has added a social line to their bridesmaid group. The Harlow dress features a classic bateau neckline and hits at the natural waist.  This gorgeous lace dress has gentle pleating and lands just above the knee with a slight scallop.  Harlow has a beautiful, low V-back and comes in four different shades: Paprika, Evergreen, Mustard  and Navy. “Twirl is OH-SO excited to add the social line to our collection!”
DRESS 3 } Lynn Lugo is a custom designer who allows you to choose any combination of her tops and skirts in any color.  Twirl recently had a trunk show for Lynn and fell head over heels in love with one of her color-block dresses. How fun is this coral combo?!

 Don’t miss out on the Amsale Bridesmaids trunk show Feb. 15-16 at Twirl, 121 Clay Ave. in Lexington. }
